August 2024
The Meeting Theme this month was Childhood Memories.
Helen: A dog stuffed with straw from her childhood. She also remembered going to Saturday Date with Jimmy Hannan and getting autographs of the singers.
Carmel: Plate given to her by her mum for a 50 th Birthday. The plate has a photo of her as a child in a pale lemon dress. She also showed her Autograph book which features signatures of South Sydney Football players from the 1970’s and flowers from her debut.
Ros: Her grandmother would send birthday parcels via the post. She brought a crochet rug for her bed made by her grandmother and a fine cotton / voile dress made for Ros’s mum. She also showed a smocked baby dress that Ros’s mum taught Ros to make.
Julie-Ann: An antique travel or lace iron that her grandmother gave to her mother and was used as a doorstop. Julie-Ann always loved it and has it now. It opens and is useable.
Lorraine: Street photos taken in town. One photo from 1946 when Lorraine was 6 years old, shows a background of shoes. Another features Lorraine in a pink viyella dress holding a felt handbag, both made by her mum. She remembers going to Anthony Hordern and having brown bread tomato sandwiches and to Bon Marche to buy buttons. Another photo is in Beamish St, Campsie. Lorraine also did the June Daly-Watkins Course in 1956 and remembers being taught how to apply make-up.
Karen: Scrapbooks made by her Godmother, Aunty Modgee (she could not say Molly). The books feature pictures cut from cards and pasted into the book. One is dated 9/7/1965 and has a photo of Karen on the back.
Viive: A small storage box made by family friends using birthday cards preserved behind plastic and crocheted together.
Annie: When she was 7-8 years old, her family holidayed at Cronulla. While there she came across a baby shop and bought a Mama Doll. The doll now wears Annie’s dress as seen in a photo of her when a few months old. She entered the doll in a competition in a beautiful lace
bonnet. Annie also knitted some booties for the doll called Anne-Marie.
Jeanette: Mother’s diamanté brooch. She also remembers that when her dad came back from the war in New Guinea, he bought a truck and started a courier company, travelling between Melbourne and Brisbane. They would meet him at the Crossroads, Liverpool.
Kim: Spending summers in the family cabin in Maine. When it rained, they needed things to do, and she learnt painting. She showed her painting of a cat painted on velvet which was tacked on a wall in the cabin until 10 years ago when the cabin was sold.
Dawn: Tigerlily embroidered tablecloth (unfinished); her first embroidered doyley; needlebook made in 4 th class; beautiful table runner embroidered with butterflies; a horseshoe ring from her grandmother when she was 6 that she still wears on her little finger.
Lynne: A teenage dream was to attend the June Daly-Watkins Course. She did this when she was 15 and has the book from the Course. This helped her get a modelling job at Grace Bros Carlingford during the school holidays.
